October’s Coke Money

cooperfootballMy husband and I are dog people. We have two very spoiled 100lb labs at home that we treat more like our kids. We’d probably have cats too, but I’m allergic.

I am somewhat of a bleeding heart. Especially when I see people who are unable to help themselves and are struggling through no fault of their own. But my empathy extends to all walks of life – dogs, cats, you name it. Whether neglected, abused or homeless, animals in need are helpless and in need of rescuing.

That’s why, this month, my saved coke money went to the Humane Society of Pulaski County, Warm Hearts for Cold Noses. They provide a safe home for up to 200 animals and have saved over 50,000 in the history of the organization.

Yet another reason

I just found this video on good.is that addresses the water shortage in the world. It provides examples of how much water each person needs, uses, and could save each day. The numbers are astounding.

For instance, it claims that 37 gallons of water are used to brew a cup of coffee and 33 gallons for a bottle of coke. I’m assuming they are talking about the entire production of these products – from growing the coffee bean, to manufacturing the item, to packaging and bottling – but WOW.

Drinking a 16 oz glass of water on the other hand only uses .165 gallons.

The First Month

Me drinking one of my last cokes at the Dave Concert in LAI almost forgot that we even took this picture at the Dave show in LA last month. But I remember now wanting a picture of me enjoying my last coke.

All in all, I guess the no-caffeine-thing has gone okay. I have stuck with the plan (with the exception of the coffee fall I took a few weeks back) and I do think that a lot of good things could come from this whole idea.

One question that my husband keeps asking me and that I haven’t really found the answer for yet is “how long am I going to do this?” I know it’s not realistic to say that I will never drink caffeine again ever. At the same time, I don’t want to throw in the towel too early. Perhaps a year?

September’s contributions

This month, I took the suggestion of my dear friend Amanda and contributed my saved caffeine dollars to Heifer International. Their Honduras project currently has a donor that is doubling all contributions up to $500,000.

I have calculated that I am saving approximately $5 a day by kicking the caffeine habit. I stopped drinking coke 2.5 weeks ago, so I figured I saved somewhere around $80-$85 dollars. I rounded that up to $100 and with the help of the matching program, I was able to send $200 to Honduras families in need.
